Accept your addiction!

People all around the world battle with addiction on a daily basis. And by addiction, I don’t mean just the big stuff. Yes, many people are addicted to drugs, to pain pills, to alcohol and many others, but addiction can manifest in a lot of forms. People can be addicted to work, to family, to abusive relationships, even to chocolate. And addictions manifest in a lot of different ways and have a lot of consequences, some very evident, and some harder to distinguish. But nevertheless, addictions influence our lives, regardless if we want to accept that or not.

And so, people have been fighting against their addictions for a very long time. In different ways and using different theories, but trying to reach the same goal. People want to fight against their addictions and negate them, they want to feel like they are normal and they have everything figured out. And this is the biggest thing that people don’t understand about addiction and the main reason why so many struggles end in a bad way. People want to be normal, people aspire to be in a certain way, without understanding that they simply cannot do it!

We are not normal, nobody is normal, because we are all unique and our uniqueness makes us what we are. If we try to fight against this uniqueness, we are only denying our essence and making our life a living hell. It isn’t the addiction that’s doing that, it is you, because you want to negate the addiction and make it into something it’s not. Addiction is a normal part of our humanity and we cannot simply erase it, no matter how much we have to suffer because of that. Erasing and denying our addictions is similar to denying our human nature, and you simply cannot do that without serious consequences.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that you should go out and do all the drugs and drink all the alcohol or something like that. Not by a long shot! What I’m saying is that you should accept that these desires are normal and that you cannot simply wipe them away. If you want to drink, you want to drink, you can’t simply deny that impulse, because that impulse is natural, that impulse is a part of your personality, that impulse comes from the humanity inside of you. You cannot deny your own humanity, and trying to do it will only bring you grief and sorrow, it will not bring you happiness in the long run.

Addiction has bad side effects, and yes, you should always try to get it under control. But you should never try to exterminate it, you should never try to fool yourself into thinking you can have total control over it. If you drink a lot and it’s affecting your life and your health, the solution is not to vow that you will never put another drop of alcohol in your mouth for the rest of your life. That’s not solving the problem, that is just changing the focus of your addiction. You are no longer addicted to drinking alcohol, you are addicted to not drinking alcohol, and if you do it after 20 years, you will find yourself right where you started. You see how many alcoholics go back to drinking heavy after slipping up, and that is because they haven’t solved their addiction, they just pushed it down inside and denied it ever existed.

That is not the way to go. If you drink too much, stop fucking drinking so much, drink less, drink responsible. That way you can enjoy something that you like while also minimizing the negative effects. And no, don’t tell me that you can’t stop yourself, that is bullshit, that is the easy way. If you really want too, you can have discipline. So stop trying to change everything about yourself, stop struggling against your addictions and letting them run your life. You have the power to do everything in moderation and you have the power to be how you want to be. Accept your addiction and you will discover how powerful that makes you!
